Kicking off...#first13of2013Haiti

Christmas night we sat counting our “gift money” we had received.  $200 + $100 + $50!  Oh boy, were we getting excited. $100 + $25 + $50. Wowza!  $20 + $50 + $20, etc.  The counting ensued and I’ll be; we now have enough to buy that dining room table we have been wanting. And, to pay completely in cash!!!

The next morning, my(Payt) phone rings.  The shaky, broken, dull and distraught voice of a dear Haitian-American friend filled my ears and sank my heart.  “My brother, I have some terrible news! You know those orphanages I have been telling you about!?  You know, the ones I sent you the pictures of.  Well, 4 children have starved to death within those orphanages over the past few days.  Two of them were 3 years old, one was 4 years, and one was 5.”

We sit counting our money, dreaming of this table we could now buy.  It would enable us to more comfortably and stylishly eat our food.  All the while, children dying from a lack of food to eat!!! And not just on one of those TV ads or pictures on the internet.  But one that we have a direct connection to and knowledge of.  We must not, we will not, we cannot sit idle.

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:14-17

P.S. We are firm believers in a long-term holistic approach when it comes to aide and missions. With that said, this campaign stands upon the clear commands in Scripture to do what you can, with what you have, right now.  We stand in faith that our efforts for the short term are directly connected to the long term.  To God be the Glory!
